As reported in the Lincolnshire Free Press by Chrissie Redford

A COMPANY planning a renewable energy park in Sutton Bridge has sparked an ‘overwhelming’ local response to possible job opportunities.

EnergyPark Sutton Bridge Limited, the developer behind the plans for EnergyPark Sutton Bridge, outlined jobs that could be made available at a recent meeting with Sutton Bridge Parish Council, which was reported in our sister paper, the Spalding Guardian.

Following the article, EnergyPark said CVs began flooding in, with more than 60 local people seeking employment. These CVs will all be kept on record until the planning process is complete and, if EnergyPark Sutton Bridge Ltd is successful, a recruitment drive will be launched.

The planning application for the renewable power station – which will be built on 64 acres at Wingland – will be submitted to South Holland District Council in August after all reports and studies are completed by the EnergyPark team.

Project managers have already made contact with local businesses to invite them to express an interest in any future contract opportunities at the site. That door remains very much open and EnergyPark Sutton Bridge Ltd is still encouraging organisations to get in touch.

Project manager Helen Rome said: “We were overwhelmed by the response to the article last week and only wish we had these jobs to offer local people right now.

“All of the CVs have been logged and filed and we will be in touch with all applicants once the planning process is complete in the winter.

“We will also be sure to announce our recruitment drive publicly at that time, so that anyone else who might be interested can apply.

“In the meantime, we look forward to keeping the community up to date with the project and very much hope we can continue to work together to make it a success.”

As reported in the Spalding Guardian by Chrissie Redford of the Lincolnshire Free Press

CONSTRUCTION of a £300-million green power station in Sutton Bridge could begin early next year.

Peterborough Renewable Energy Limited (PREL) says plans are due to go before South Holland District Council in August.

Project manager Helen Rome, speaking at Sutton Bridge annual parish meeting, said she was delighted to report the 64-acre project that will provide renewable energy for homes and businesses on the Wingland estate was now on schedule. Following approval of the plans, Ms Rome said the three-year construction of EnergyPark Sutton Bridge would start after winter on asite next to the Miracle-Groworks.

However, since the initial public consultations in 2009 there had been changes – the most significant being the movement of tankers supplying the station with biomass fuel (living and recently deadbiological material).

Concern was raised initially about lorry movement to and from the station when it had been expected to be one every four minutes.

However, it was now estimated to be four an hour, based on a 24-hour period, or eight an hour, over 12 hours.

Ms Rome said: “We can confirm that vehicles will only use Centenary Way, which leads onto the A17. No vehicles will be directed down Chalk Lane or through the village of Sutton Bridge.

“We are confident that our EnergyPark will have less than a one per cent impact on surrounding roads, based the Department for Transport’s latest available data, which records current total daily traffic flows at 15,604. As such, we are also confident that our development will not cause any delays to traffic movements on the A17.”

The reduction of the number of tankers needed had been influenced by the choice of wood chippings as biomass fuel, which Ms Rome said the company was confident could be sourced from the surrounding area. Parishioner Colin Blundell asked how this could be when there are no forests in the area.

He said: “It won’t be very eco-friendly if tankers are have to travel out of the county for chippings.”

KNM Group Berhad, the Malaysian manufacturing giant, have announced the signing of an agreement with Poplar Holdings Limited for the exclusive rights to conclude the acquisition of the entire paid-up capital of its subsidiary, Poplar Investments Limited, owners of the land earmarked for the development of EnergyPark Peterborough in the East of England.

The agreement will see KNM take ownership of the EnergyPark site, which is consented for the UK’s first 80MWe biomass from waste to power station. KNM had earlier signed a deal worth £450 million with the developers, Green Energy Parks’ (GEP) subsidiary, Peterborough Renewable Energy Ltd in 2010 for the engineering, procurement and construction of the waste to power station.

KNM and GEP will now move forward together under an SPV, Energy Park Investment Ltd which will be jointly owned to realise this ground-breaking project, which was granted consent by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in November 2009. Once operational, the plant will draw upon a mix of best available technologies to achieve maximum diversion of waste from landfill and create renewable energy and recycled products at the same time.

Working closely with the technical team at GEP, the deal will pave the way for KNM to begin construction on the site in the near future.

Commenting on the proposed investment, Managing Director of Green Energy Parks, Chris Williams said:

“In KNM Group Berhad we have found a partner who shares our ethos, drive and ambition to deliver a landfill free future.

“Together, we look forward to breaking ground and getting the construction phase under way.”

Announcing the deal, KNM Group Berhad Executive Chairman & Chief Executive Officer, Ir. Lee Swee Eng added:

“This is a ground-breaking project which will mark an important development in the way that waste is dealt with in the UK and we are incredibly excited at the prospect of having a partnership with Green Energy Parks, which forms a significant part of our drive into the renewable and clean energy sector.”

Speaking in response to EEF The Manufacturer’s Organisation’s report on Defra’s waste policy, Green Energy Parks’ Managing Director, Chris Williams said:

“Robust policy reform is required to reduce investment barriers and open the door for value-added waste management to take-off in the UK. EEF’s report clearly demonstrates the inadequacy of the current infrastructure for efficiently and sustainably managing our resources.

“At a time of unprecedented strain on core commodities and growing pressure on businesses to reduce costs, it is counter-intuitive that we are shipping valuable resources overseas.

“We have the technology and know-how to utilise these resources, ready to go here in the UK, with projects like GEP’s sustainable EnergyPark in the pipeline. But legislative and regulatory certainty is vital if others are to follow our lead.

“Industry players are eagerly anticipating Defra’s upcoming ‘Resource Security Action Plan,’ which we hope will provide some of the answers that the UK needs.”

UK gas and electricity market regulator, Ofgem, has advised EnergyPark Peterborough that it has been approved for Renewable Obligation Certificate (ROCs) Pre-Accreditation, a vital step forward for the ground-breaking project.

Green Energy Parks’ (GEP) Peterborough scheme received pre-accreditation approval for the renewable energy it will generate under the current ROCs bandings for Gasification and Pyrolysis, at a level of 2 ROCs per megawatt hour of electricity produced.

After several months of rigorous research and development, the GEP team received Ofgem verification that the EnergyPark’s Fuels Measurement and Sampling procedure (FMS) is both robust and reliable.

Speaking today, GEP’s Managing Director, Chris Williams said:

“This is a significant achievement in the UK’s transition to a low carbon economy and moving closer to solutions that provide reliable, green energy for years to come.

“EnergyPark Peterborough will sustainably divert 750,000 tonnes of waste from landfill per year, at the same time as generating thousands of megawatt hours of renewable energy. In the UK we produce 280 million tonnes of rubbish per year – we have to act now to tackle this.”

The year has gone quickly, a lot of information sharing and planning has taken place.

A revised constitution and standing orders documents are in progress to secure a safety net for the SRC members when the charity fund is ready for the community to apply for.

We have been shown the vision for PREL’s new Greenhouses and Bio Diversity Plant / Energy Park and it is fair to say all on the committee were impressed, an exciting project which will bring to Peterborough a pride with something as innovative and forward thinking as this.

The plans for environmental management system / health and safety are being written and will take some time to complete.

The committee are setting in place the procedures to run the trusts plans for the community fund, and will be ready for when the time comes to implement them.

It has been an interesting year, some stops and starts, but overall we the committee are excited about the project for the future of Peterborough and it’s residents.

“GOING THE EXTRA MILE”

GREEN ENERGY PARKS & PETERBOROUGH UNITED LAUNCH GLOBAL COMPETITION TO SUPPORT CHARITIES

Green Energy Parks is delighted to announce the launch of the “Going the Extra Mile” competition, in conjunction with Peterborough United FC, to raise vital funds for three local charities. The competition challenges fans to photograph themselves in their EnergyPark Peterborough shirts in tourist spots around the world to raise money for The Posh’s charities – the East Anglian Air Ambulance, the East Anglia Children’s Hospices and the Peterborough United Foundation. Competition is already fierce, with photographs sent in from as far afield as Detroit, Cape Verde, and the Maldives.

The best photos and a league table of most miles travelled will be published in each home match programme. Local businesses and individuals are encouraged to pledge donations to the competition pot, so that the charities can benefit as much as possible. All donations will be acknowledged in match programmes.

At the end of the season, the mileage of the people who have travelled the furthest in any of the four shirts will be converted into cash and donated to the three charities. The overall winner will see money donated to these great charities and will also win a pair of executive seats for the last Championship home game of the season, against Watford on the 21st April 2012.

Speaking about the competition, Chris Williams, Managing Director of Green Energy Parks said:

“The Going the Extra Mile competition recognises the commitment of our fans, while raising funds for three great charities.

“We can’t wait to see how far the Peterborough United shirt travels.”

Chris Donaldson, Area Fundraising Manager for North Cambridgeshire and West Norfolk, East Anglian Air Ambulance commented:

“We’re enormously appreciative of the fund-raising efforts of Green Energy Parks and of Peterborough United and their supporters. This competition will provide vital funds to sustain the life-saving work of the East Anglian Air Ambulance, which relies entirely on fundraising and contributions to keep our two helicopters in the air and to provide medical equipment. We wish all those involved with “Going the Extra Mile” the very best of luck.”

Karen Newton, from East Anglia Children’s Hospices, one of the charities who will benefit, said:

“The support of Peterborough United, and their fans allows us to carry out our vital work in helping children with life threatening diseases and provide support for their families.

“We are so grateful to the fans and hope this competition is a huge success.”

The Peterborough Evening Telegraph today publishes a front page feature on Green Energy Parks’ (GEP) EnergyPark Peterborough project, which showcases the company’s proposals to use heat and gases created through renewable energy generation to create the UK’s largest greenhouses.

Using waste heat from thermal treatment processes is one of the biggest challenges facing the waste management sector at present, and this venture is another example of how GEP continues to lead the way in sustainable development in this country.

The plans for the greenhouses, which will create up to 1,500 jobs, have been welcomed by Peterborough City Council.

The ground-breaking EnergyPark Peterborough project, which was granted consent by the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in November 2009, will be the first sustainable biomass-from-waste powerstation of its kind in Europe. Drawing upon a mix of best available technologies, PREL will achieve maximum diversion of waste from landfill, creating renewable energy and recycled products at the same time. Tetronics’ plasma-enhanced waste recovery systems will play a vital role in achieving that sustainable cycle and ensuring that the greatest value is taken from the waste input.

Following the gasification of a clean biomass fuel, the hazardous Air Pollution Control (APC) residues, which would traditionally be sent to landfill, will instead be collected and safely transferred to the co-located plasma unit. Tetronics’ plasma technology will then separate and destroy all the hazardous components in the residue, generating a totally safe inert product, similar to granite. This non-hazardous product called Plasmarok® can then be re-used as a glass or building aggregate in a range of applications, achieving close to zero residues remaining.

Commenting on the deal, CEO of Tetronics, Stephen Davies, added:

“We are delighted to sign the Technology Licence Agreement with PREL, a pioneering company leading the way in waste management in this country.

“Tetronics has decades of experience in the UK, Europe and Asia, processing problematic wastes, such as APC residues, in a stable and cost-effective way.

“We are very confident that this development will be a trailblazer for others to follow.”

Speaking about the Agreement, Chris Williams, Managing Director for PREL said:

“Tetronics’ plasma-enhanced waste treatment technology has been the final piece to the puzzle of ensuring that the absolute minimum of residues from the treatment process needs to be processed offsite.

“Tetronics’ contribution has been vital in guaranteeing that a sustainable, practically zero waste facility is achieved. Through this partnership, we hope to see many more developments like EnergyPark Peterborough in years to come.”
